THEREMIN COURSE IN LEIPZIG

It is known, that the famed violinist trains herself each and every day, and not only musically but she keeps her body and soul in shape just the same. She visits her singing master, has yoga and body art – deep work trainings each week on a regular basis, next to her daily violin practices.

But last weekend, she went all the way to Leipzig to learn even more. In this city, which was once part of the German Empire, later East Germany, lives one of Europe’s best Theremin teachers, Carolina Eyck. The city isn’t even close to resembling a city that was once part of a communist country. It’s architecture is nothing like it was before, and the vehicles on the streets aren’t Trabants and Wartburgs anymore. They have definitely caught up with - what we once called - West Germany.

There are very few Theremin artists in the word, and therefore there are even less, who teach how to play the instrument. Carolina Eyck is one of those teachers and Katica signed up to one of her courses through the internet. They are both members of the Theremin World community, which was founded by Peter Theremin, the grandson of the instruments inventor, Leon Theremin.

The course was given to Katica in German language by the Theremin and viola artist. Katica and Carolina agreed that they will meet next time this summer in France at the Theremin Academy, but till then they will continue with the master course on Skype.

After the Theremin class was over, Katica sat on a bike and visited the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Johann Sebastian Bach conducted from 1723 and where he wrote many of his masterpieces.

The next time Katica will play the Theremin and show what she has learned in Leipzig will be on May 28th in Budakeszi at the local Community Center. She will be accompanied by her band and her younger brother Csaba will be her guest.
