Katica Illényi and the Miskolc Dixieland Band at the Miskolc Opera Festival

The Miskolc Opera Festival has a thirteen year old history, and it has become one of the most prestigious events in the Central- European region. This was the second time that Katica has performed on the event. The first time, she performed with a symphonic orchestra, this time we were able to hear and see her in the company of the Miskolc Dixieland Band. The Elizabeth Square was packed with people, who greeted the artist who recently arrived home from Warsaw with a standing ovation. Katica told us, that in weeks time, she performed with three different kind of backup bands. At the Opera of Warsaw, a symphony orchestra with 65 musicians stood behind her. At the Water, Music and Flower Festival she was accompanied by piano, and at Miskolc, a Dixieland band. The concert started off with Dixieland hits. Among others, we heard the Tiger Rag, Alexanser’s Ragtime Band, and Honeysuckle Rose, then Katica stayed alone on the stage with her pianist István Bundzik, who is also the pianist of the Miskolc Dixieland Band. It was a touching and uplifting experience when we heard A quoi ca sert l’amour, Edith Piaf’s La vie en rose, Franz Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 and the spiritual Amazing Grace.

At the final, the Dixieland Band joined her again and finished the concert together. The festival’s audience demanded an encore, with a standing ovation.
